Canada – Junior Master Class 3 – Verslag 1 mei 2004

By the SockeysI was up very early, because I was quite nervous about going to Canada. I had to be at my school at half past 8. There were some friends to say goodbye and then we left. Our parents were driving us to Amsterdam. That’s our capital and that’s where the airport is too. It took about 2 hours. We had to stop one time, because Peter was sick. He threw up, but after that he was okay, so we kept on going. We had to be at the airport at 11 o’clock. All the Dutch students were there. We got to meet all of them finally. Most of us didn’t know each other before this trip to Canada. We had a long time left before we had to go on the plane. We went shopping and eating in groups. One hour later we had to check in. Finally we could go to the plane, it was really big. We had a nice time on the plane, there were nice movies and there was a lot of food, it looked like they thought we were going to starve any minute. But it was good, the staff was really nice. We had to fly a long time, it took 8 hours!!After the flight we had to show our passport and other documents a lot of times. There happened a really weird thing. Some people were sent to the ‘immigration’ section. Because they had a pink line on their paper. Of course they could leave it again after they explained everything. It was just kind of confusing. We had to wait a long time before our suitcases arrived, but everyone got their suitcase. After that we had to go to a big hall, the ‘arrival’ hall. Jim Carleton was waiting for us with his camera. He filmed our arrival the whole time. There were teachers too. They drove us to the WH day school. We had a great welcome there. All participants, Dutch and Canadian, got a nice warm sweater. It’s red and there are both flags on, Dutch and Canadian. The Canadian participants got a ribbon from the Dutch Queen Beatrix. We ate pizza during those things. After that we could go to the houses of our Canadian matches. Because of all the time difference the Dutch people were really tyred I guess. So we all went to bed early. It was a great day and a great experience. I hope the whole week is going to be so great too.

It was so early for me but the Canada adventure made me wake up very early in the morning. Kim came to my home at nine o’clock. Then we started driving to the airport… At 11 o’clock we met the other students at the airport. And we were flying at 2:30. It was a very nice flight because we watched movies and we listened to music… We arrived at 10 o’clock Dutch time (Canadian time 4 o’clock)

At the airport was Jim Carlton and some other teachers were also waiting for us… Lots of enthusiasm. They drove us to the W.H.Day school. And we had a great welcome there. There was a red bag for each of the Dutch participants with their names on them. In the bags were all sorts of nice Canadian things and flyers. All the participants also got a red sweater with the Dutch and the Canadian flags. The Canadian participants got a ribbon from our Dutch queen Beatrix… After that we could go to the houses of our Canadian matches. We were really tyred because there is a time difference…

Sanne ‘Sockey’ Guliker

On Saturday in the morning I was at my friends house name Karlee. She had a sleep over on Friday with a bunch of her friends for her Birthday. When I went home I had to clean my room, and set up some things for Fleur to come. I was so excited for her to come. Later on in the day, around 3:30, Karlee and I went over to the school to decorate and help set up the front of the school for their arrival. When we arrived at the school we met Rebecca, Sarah, and Jacquline there so they could help set up to. We decorated the front of the school with a bunch of Canada flags, and red and white balloons. It looked really good. We did this so the Holland people had a great welcome. When all of the Dutch students arrived everyone was extremely excited to see each other!

I am pretty sure the Dutch had a great welcome as well.

When all the parents were at the school, the teachers handed out some red sweatshirts to all of the students and teachers. One of the Dutch teachers also handed out a ribbon from the Queen of Holland to all of the Canadian students.

Afer the service at the school, Karlee, Sanne, Fleur and I went over to Karlee’s house for a while to see her house. After we all went to my house and everybody got to meet each other as well.

I think that everybody had a great welcoming to Canada, and I hope that they have a great rest of the week.

On Saturday I was very excited of course, I’m sure that everyone was very excited just like me. On Saturday I had some friends stay over the night before so that morning I had a lot of girls stay over until about 11 o’clock . When they left I had to clean the house because we had made a mess on the Friday night. After that I went into my room and I cleaned it because that is were Sanne was going to stay, so I made sure that the room was nice and tidy. After a couple of hours had passed I was getting even more excited, because they were just hours away. Becky called me to see if I wanted to go to the school to decorate for when our guest arrive. So to save some time I went and help her, Jacqueline, Sarah, and Rachel. It took us about an hour to decorate the school. After that I had to go home and wait until they came. When I got the call that they would be here around 6:00 I was really excited. Finally they had arrived and we finally got to meet each other. When everyone had arrived we had a little get to gather at the school so everyone could meet everyone. We didn’t stay long because we thought that Sanne would have been tired because it was an 8 hour flight. When we got home I showed her around the house and then we went over to Rachel’s house and Rachel, Fleur, Sanne and I watched a movie. After the movie we got pretty tired because for Sanne and Fleur the time difference was 6 hours so they got pretty tired. So far I have really enjoyed Sanne staying at my house.
