Canada – Junior Master Class 1 – Dagverslag 6 mei 2002

Report adults by: Marco Koene

After another good rest at the st Thomas university residence, we had our breakfast. The traditional Dutch sandwich with cheese was nowhere to be found and none of us seemed to mind! A quick bus tour, we cr0ossed the river, brought us to our next stop on our one week tour of Canada. We arrived around 09.00 at Nasiss Middle School. At the school we were welcomed and went on a tour of the school. The differences between a ‘normal’ Dutch school and this school in Canada were obvious. In Canada they have much more space. In this school they also incorporated a system of gold stars, if a student was caught doing something good or nice by a teacher he or she was rewarded with a gold star on as wall. This constitutes a very positive approach and my feelings are we in Holland must give this system some thoughts. In this school they also had a swimming pool, which our students were soon to find out. The general facilities regarding physical education were enormous, judging by the size of their gymnasium.
After a quick break the teacher went to work with the software I-movie. As the name implies this is run under the Imac system instead of the ,in Holland, more common Windows system. That also is a big difference between the schools. In Canada most school visited used Imacs or any other Macintosh system and in Holland most schools run pc platforms. The movie editing workshop was great fun and we learned a lot of new things.Lunch in the library.

After lunch the students went to the video editing workshop and the teacher went to attend some presentations. Around 14.40 word came that the Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn was shot. Immediately we phoned to the Netherlands and visited the internet to get the latest update. The use and purpose of ict became obvious; within 1 hour of the events on our country we knew in Canada what happened.

After our visit of the school we went on to Cagetown. It was only a short drive (max 1 hour) and we arrived at the small town. A small town it was indeed; apprx. 300 families are living in Cagetown. In Cagetown we visited yet another partner school. After a warm welcome and some Kodak moments the teachers and students went their separate ways. We the teachers went for a short walk to the ,what  I assume was the center of the town. A bar, post office and some houses that was it. Cagetown is beautifully situated alongside a river, which name I at the moment cannot recall. Upon arriving in the town center we went to have a drink in the bar. But before I went inside I took sometime to look at the scenery. A moment well spent. The river and woods made a beautiful picture. In the bar we all had our drinks and we got real Canadian caps!

When our thirst was quenched it was time for our dinner. But before we could go to have our dinner we visited one of the apple orchards this region is famous for. Of course we tasted the produce and the fine drinks that are made of it.

Then it was time for our dinner. This dinner was a traditional Canadian dinner and what a tradition it is. After dinner I went for a small walk. Then we all went back to the school to meet up with the students and we all went back to St Thomas for a quick visit to the campus pub and a good nights rest..

Report students program by: Rachel Smits, Isabelle Moors and Tias van Moorsel

Hello everybody ,

We Rachel Smits, Isabelle Moors and Tias van Moorsel gone tell you something about Monday the 6 of May. That morning we got up early and we had a very delicious breakfast with smoked bacon, eggs, muffins etc. after breakfast we went to Nasis Middle School. First we introduced ourselves and than the students from Nasis Middle School. After the introduction we went to go swimming in the swimming pool of Nasis Middle School. There was a large pool with a diving board and there was a volleyball net in, where we played volley for almost an hour. There was also a large bubble bath, and of course we went a few times from the slide, what was very cool. After swimming we played some basketball in the gym. Than we had a delicious lunch. We had many choices of what we wanted to eat and of course there was chips. After the lunch we went to the computer classroom where we could choose between editing and claying. Rachel and Isabelle choose editing and Tias choose claying. Rachel and Isabelle didn’t do editing but they were only mailing and msn’n. Tias also didn’t much he was only making figures from clay. The meaning of the claying was to make a little film with the figures we made but the computer was broken so it had no use. After we were finished with claying Tias went back to the computer classroom and he also did mailing his parents. When everybody had finished editing we say good bye to all the students of Nasis Middle School. We thanked everybody for the lovely day and we gave Mister Gallant a little present from Holland. We got a present too.

We had a wonderful day and I want to thank everybody who had organising this day.

Rachel Smits,

Isabelle Moors,

Tias van Moorsel.
